Rest is essential to our wellbeing and our ability to perform but it is often overlooked when we are ploughing through our never-ending to-do list.
In her new book The Art of Rest, Claudia Hammond outlines the top 10 favourite things people do to rest. These include reading, spending time in nature, time alone, listening to music, doing nothing in particular, a good walk, a nice hot bath, daydreaming, watching TV and mindfulness.
There are of course many other things that people find restful such as going for a run, practising yoga, doing something creative or gardening.
Being too busy is one excuse we make for not resting enough. However, we often find it hard to give ourselves permission to take time out. Doing something for ourselves can simply feel too self-indulgent. But as the saying goes you can’t pour from an empty vessel.
So starting from today choose your favourite ways to rest and see if you can commit to at least 10 minutes a day.
